Kermit's Olympic bound

Our congratulations go out to Louisville soccer referee Kermit Quisenberry, who has been selected to officiate at this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.

Kermit, who now resides in Florida, is just one of six US referees who will be working at the men's and women's soccer tournaments from August 6-24. He will be an assistant referee in the 16 team men’s competition.

Kermit (39) got his start in soccer playing for Sawyer Youth Soccer in Louisville and became a referee at 14. It wasn't long before his potential was recognized by local USSF national referees Brian Darling and John David McGee, who mentored him in his formative years. He has officiated at numerous Major League Soccer games and international matches.

Kermit went to Male High School and Murray State University. He is now an athletic trainer and teacher at Taylor Middle High School in Pierson, Florida.
His parents, Estelle and Gordon, are long time soccer administrators and are heavily involved in the officiating program in the area, while his brother Mark is also a long time soccer official.

Super Strikers!

Southern Indiana United's U11 Strikers hit the target at the weekend when taking the White River Classic in Noblesville.

Paul Duckworth's troops came home with a three game unbeaten record, after wins against Fishers SC (5-0), Hoosier FC (3-2) and Carmel United (3-2).

The boys got off to a flyer against Fishers, helped by a Parker Davidenkoff hat-trick, as well as goals from Jacob Hedrick and Alex McLaughlin. Strikers then came from behind to beat the Hoosier FC White team 3-2 after being down 1-2 at the half. Goals were scored by Jacob Hedrick, Adam Cantrell and Matthew Siebert.

In the championship game on Sunday, SIU beat Carmel United Premier White, a team which had not lost a game this season. Despite an early goal by Zach Yagle, the U11s found themselves 2-1 down.

However, another fight back ensued after Parker Davidenkoff tied the game up with a free kick, followed by a Jacob Hedrick shot to the right corner late in the first half. Strikers held on with a great defensive effort in the second half to win the championship 3-2.

ODP Sister Act!

(April 29 '08)
Sisters have figured prominently in Indiana's recently announced Olympic Development Program teams.

Stephanie and Selena Iglesias are among 15 southern Indiana players named on the final ODP squads, while Maggie O'Farrell is set to be joined by her sister Kady when further teams are announced on May 6.

The Iglesias girls from New Albany hit the right notes when trying out for the ODP '95 regional camp, which they were joined on by another New Albanian in the shape of Brandy OrthBecker.

Maggie O'Farrell of Georgetown, who plays for Javanon, made the '96 team, while sister Kady is set to be chosen on the '94 girls' team.

Morgan Hutchison, of SIU's Jaguars, and Taylor Little are alternates on the '93 team.

Among the boys selected were Jeffersonville’s Pierce Crawley (1995), Vincent Straight (1993) and Jordan Vejar (1994), while Cray Trimble of Floyd Knobs was chosen as an alternate on the '94 team.

Chase Gosman, Jacob Hedrick, Andrew Kennedy, Tyler McGeorge and Tyler Menne have been chosen to go to the '96 regional camp.

Mike Vejar, Indiana Youth Soccer's district commissioner for the area, said he continues to be impressed by the level of talent being generated here.

"Last year, we had an unprecedented 11 players on the ODP program and surpassed that this year with 15," he told The Evening News & The Tribune. "My compliments go out to all the are clubs, directors of coaching, administrator, and coaches who commit their time to educating themselves for the purpose of properly training our area's soccer youth.

"I'm sure our area's high school coaches can't wait for these talented players to join their programs. Southern Indiana's soccer future seems well stocked for success for the years to come."

Vejar said that he is particularly proud of Vincent Straight, who he has coached for seven years and is bound for Jeffersonville High School, making the '93 team.

"It is a very talented group and for Vincent to have made it given the team was downsized from 36 last season to only 18 this season is a huge accomplishment for this young man," he said.

Vejar's son Jordan made the '89 team in what is his second consecutive selection.

"Last year at ODP camp, Jordan led the 94 team in scoring in four games against Wisconsin, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Iowa. He will play at Jeffersonville High School in the fall of 2009," said Vejar.

Pierce Crawley, who plays for Javanon's 95 team, is a repeat member of the ODP team.
"He likely will fill defender role on the team as his skills are very advanced for his age," said Vejar. "He'll attend Providence HS in the fall of 2009."

The 91, 92, and 94 girls will not make their team announcements until after the final trial session on May 4. Those teams will be listed on Indiana Youth Soccer's website (www.indianayouthsoccer.com) on Wednesday, May 6.

The Harpeth Futbol Club event, held at three different parks in and around Nashville, saw representation from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.

And amongst them were Net-Surfers' sea of purple teams, spread out over two hotels and three different parks for the tournament.

They included Marlon Jones and Greg Reger's U11s, who captured a gold medal with a perfect 4-0-0 record. Wins were gained against LFC Classic of Kentucky (2-1), Camp Forest, Tenn. by 3-0 and DC Diamonds, Tenn. by 7-0, before they secured the title by blowing away Lady Hurricanes, Tenn. 10-0.

The U10s side advanced to the finals before falling to East Ridge Express of Tennessee 6-1. Julie Deuser, who takes over as New Albany High School girls' coach this year in place of Sara Dickman, saw her girls tie 2-2 with East Ridge Express in their first game, before beating Lady Hurricanes. They secured a place after beating AC United, Ky. 1-0.

The U14 team, co-coached by brothers Tony and Bobby Holland, were unbeaten and unscored upon in qualifying play (3-0-0). They garnered a hard-earned silver medal after a 2-1 loss in the finals to the TUSC girls of Tennessee.

Coach Tim Maciejak's U16 girls battled back from two close defeats on Saturday to post wins over Camp Forest of Tullohoma, Tenn. 2-0, and the host Harpeth FC Hurricanes 4-1. For the weekend, Cristian May-Boquiren bagged four goals.

The U12 Purple squad, coached by Dave Carrier, posted a 1-1-1 slate for the event, including a 2-0 victory over the Oldham County's Thoroughbreds.
Also competing for the weekend were the U12 White coached by Errol Morgan and Russ Corby's U13 squad.
